A first-month onboarding checklist

Give the assistant a repeatable route to good work.

VMA Companies Index editorial team · Updated 8 November 2026

The decision

Before the first shift, assign one supervisor, document the initial queue and agree escalation contacts. Set up individual system accounts with the access your practice approves. Confirm the required agreements and training before patient information is accessible.

What to compare

During the first week, start with a narrow workflow and review a sample of completed work every day. Keep a shared list of questions and update the written instructions when a recurring ambiguity appears. Expand the task list only after the first workflow is consistent.

Before you commit

At the end of the month, compare the queue's age, rework rate and response times with the starting position. Discuss workload and schedule changes with the assistant and provider. More completed tasks are useful only when accuracy and patient communication remain acceptable.
